Match not playing on Zee 5? Here's how to fix it in your browser
If a FIFA World Cup match won't start, keeps freezing, or the screen just goes black on Zee 5, it's almost always one of three things. Find your problem below and follow the simple steps.
Chrome Microsoft Edge Firefox Safari Opera
⚽ Screen is black or shows an error Won't play at all
To stop people from copying matches, every browser has a built-in "lock" for video (it's called Widevine). If this lock is switched off or out of date, Zee 5 can't show the video, so you just get a black box or an error mentioning "DRM" or "Widevine." Good news: it takes two minutes to fix.
Quick things to check first
- Make sure your browser is fully updated to the latest version.
- Try it in a normal window, not a private/incognito one — some browsers won't play protected video there.
- Close any other tab or app that's also playing a video, then try again.
- After each step below, close and reopen your browser before testing.
Chrome chrome://components
- Type
chrome://components in the address bar and hit Enter. - Find Widevine Content Decryption Module and click Check for update. Don't see it? Update Chrome itself from
chrome://settings/help — that brings it back. - Go to
chrome://settings/content/protectedContent and turn on Sites can play protected content. - Reload the Zee 5 match page.
Microsoft Edge edge://components
- Type
edge://components in the address bar and update Widevine Content Decryption Module. - Go to
edge://settings/content/protectedContent and turn on Allow sites to play protected content. - Still missing? Update Edge from
edge://settings/help first, then repeat step 1.
Firefox about:addons
- Go to
about:preferences#general, scroll down to DRM Content, and tick Play DRM-controlled content. - Go to
about:addons → Plugins, find Widevine Content Decryption Module, and turn it on (or update it if it's already on). - Restart Firefox and try the match again.
Safari (Mac) System Settings
- Safari's video lock is built into the Mac itself, so just make sure your Mac is updated: System Settings → General → Software Update.
- In Safari, go to Settings → Websites → Auto-Play and check Zee 5 isn't set to block video.
- Turn off Settings → Advanced → Prevent cross-site tracking for a quick test — turn it back on after if it wasn't the cause.
Opera opera://components
- Type
opera://components in the address bar and update Widevine Content Decryption Module. - Go to
opera://settings/content/protectedContent and turn protected content on. - Click the shield icon in the address bar and turn Opera's built-in ad blocker off for Zee 5 — it sometimes blocks the video lock along with ads.
Updated everything but still stuck? Clear cookies just for Zee 5 (not your whole browser) and reload.
🧩 Page looks broken or player won't load Ad blockers & extensions
Ad blockers and other browser add-ons are great for skipping ads, but they can also accidentally block the Zee 5 video player itself, since it can look like an "ad" to them. This is one of the most common reasons the match page loads but the video never appears.
Chrome chrome://extensions
- Go to
chrome://extensions. - Switch every extension off, then reload Zee 5 to check the match plays now.
- Turn extensions back on one at a time, reloading after each, until the video stops working again — that's the one causing trouble.
Microsoft Edge edge://extensions
- Go to
edge://extensions and switch each one off. - Also check
edge://settings/content/all → if Tracking prevention is set to Strict, move it to Basic for Zee 5. - Turn extensions back on one at a time to spot the one causing it.
Firefox about:addons
- Go to
about:addons → Extensions and turn each one off. - Click the shield icon in the address bar — if Enhanced Tracking Protection is blocking something, turn it off just for Zee 5.
- Turn extensions back on one by one to find the culprit.
Safari (Mac) Settings → Extensions
- Go to Settings → Extensions and uncheck every extension.
- Try Zee 5 in a Private window to double-check extensions are the cause.
- Turn extensions back on one at a time. For content blockers, use the AA menu in the toolbar and pick "Turn off Content Blockers for this website."
Opera opera://extensions
- Go to
opera://extensions and turn off every add-on. - Click the shield icon in the address bar and turn off Opera's built-in ad blocker for Zee 5.
- Turn extensions back on one at a time to find the one causing the issue.
Using a work or college laptop? Some extensions are installed by IT and can't be switched off by you. If the toggle is greyed out, skip ahead to the network section below, or check with your IT team.
📶 Match keeps buffering or won't load on this Wi-Fi Network & VPN
If Zee 5 works fine at home but not on office, college, or public Wi-Fi — or it stops working the moment you turn on a VPN — the network itself is blocking it, not your browser. Here's how to work around it.
1. Test on another network
- Switch to your phone's mobile data (hotspot) and try Zee 5 again.
- If it works there, the Wi-Fi you were on is blocking Zee 5 or streaming sites in general.
2. Turn off your VPN
- Switch off any VPN app or browser VPN extension completely, then reload the match — VPNs very often break streaming video.
- If you need the VPN running, try a different server location, or set your VPN app to skip Zee 5 (look for "split tunneling" or "app exceptions" in its settings).
On office, college, or public Wi-Fi? Some networks block streaming sites on purpose to save bandwidth. If everything above points to the network, only the network's IT admin can fix that from their end — the simplest workaround on your side is switching to mobile data for the match.
